The carotid arteries carry blood from the heart to the brain, and are located on either side of your neck. Blockages, or build-up of cholesterol plaque in these arteries may predispose to the development of a stroke. People who have had build-up of cholesterol plaque in other places of their body (such as their heart or their legs) may be at risk for developing a build-up in these arteries as well.
Luckily, these blockages can be diagnosed non-invasively with an ultrasound of the arteries. This can be performed in our office and results can be available quickly. The test takes about 45 minutes, and no special preparation or dietary restrictions apply. Please do not wear turtlenecks or other high-collared shirts for this test, or you may be asked to partially disrobe.
