The ankle brachial index (ABI) is a test used to screen for the development of blockages in the arteries to the legs. Blockages in these arteries may also predispose people to blockages in the heart or the carotids as well--thus the ABI has been shown to correlate with overall risks for heart attack and stroke. This is a simple, non invasive test performed in our office. It takes about 45 minutes and consists of comparing blood pressures and blood flow waveforms in your arms versus your feet, often before and after exercise. Results are often available quickly, and no special preparation is necessary for this test.
