What is cosmetic tooth bonding?

Cosmetic bonding is a process that can work wonders for your smile. Dr. Andrew Mutch recommends getting tooth bonding to correct a tooth gap, repair fractures, and even reshape the patient’s teeth. It has also been known to be effective in covering spots, chips on the tooth’s surface, and discoloration. Today, it is also the most preferred method of instantly repairing a broken front tooth.

What can I expect from tooth bonding?

  1. To prepare for the binding procedure, your dentist will choose a shade of the composite resin that matches your natural tooth color the closest.
  2. The surface of the affected tooth will be roughened or slightly abraded and then lightly coated with a condition of liquid that will improve the adhesion of the bonding material.
  3. Once the tooth has been properly prepared, the resin is applied onto the tooth and then molded and shaped accordingly.
  4. The bonding material will be hardened using intraoral ultraviolet light or a curing laser.
  5. Once this hardens, the dentist will trim and reshape the bond to make it proportionate with the rest of the patient’s teeth
  6. The finished tooth bond will be polished to resemble the sheen of natural teeth

The entire process usually takes about 30 minutes to one hour to complete in a single visit for a single tooth. However, if more than one tooth is indicated for restoration, the patient may need to come back for the succeeding bonding sessions.

What are the advantages of tooth bonding?

  • Tooth bonding is one of the easiest and least expensive dental restorations
  • Since they can be made directly in the patient’s mouth, they are able to create a custom fit and can be molded and reshaped according to the patient’s needs
  • Bonding can be completed with one visit, unless there are several teeth that need to be bonded, which will have to be done in subsequent visits.
  • Bonding requires very little tooth enamel to be removed, if at all
  • This procedure does not require any form of anesthesia.
