Sinus Lift in Madison
Sinus Lift Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
A sinus lift is a surgical procedure that increases the amount of bone in your upper jaw before dental implant surgery. Dr. Jang may recommend a sinus lift if you don’t have enough healthy bone to support dental implants.
After creating an opening in your gum tissue, Dr. Jang lifts the sinus membrane and packs the space with bone grafting material. The new bone eventually integrates with the existing bone to create a stable foundation for your dental implants.
A sinus lift is often necessary to place dental implants. These tooth root replacements osseointegrate, or bond, to your jawbone once placed. Having healthy bone in your jaw is crucial when preparing for dental implants.
Many dental implant patients don’t have an abundance of healthy jawbone. When you lose a permanent tooth, the root eventually dissolves. The supporting bone breaks down and resorbs, leaving less foundational support for your implants. Without this support, your teeth can also shift and your face may start to sag. Additional tooth loss is common with bone resorption.
Sinus lift surgery restores the bone in your upper jaw by increasing the amount of tissue between your molars and premolars.
To help you prepare for a sinus lift, Dr. Jang must determine the best type of bone graft for you. There are three types: autogenous, allogenic, and xenograft. While autogenous uses bone from your body, allogenic grafts take bone from a cadaver. Xenografts use bone from an animal, typically a cow.
Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans allow Dr. Jang to view the amount of bone you have in your jaw to determine the best placement for your sinus lift and dental implants.
During a sinus lift, Dr. Jang administers an anesthetic before making an incision in your gum tissue. He then lifts the tissue to expose the underlying bone. Dr. Jang creates a small circle in the bone and fills the cavity space with bone grafting material before closing the incision.
It takes about four to 12 months to heal from a sinus lift. Once your mouth fully recovers, Dr. Jang can surgically place your dental implants.
