Bone Grafting in Madison

Bone Grafting in Madison

As we age, previous or existing dental problems may make the loss of some or all of our teeth inevitable. While some of our older patients still get dentures, many are now opting to replace missing teeth with dental implants.

Implant success is directly related to the presence of quality bone in the area of the implant site. If the Jawbone has been eroded, a bone grafting procedure can be utilized to rebuild lost bone and provide a solid basis for your new tooth. The procedure is virtually pain free and can be done in our office.

How it works

Your dentist will sometimes use a small amount of bone, usually from your hip or leg, to build up your jawbone, but more commonly dentists use an artificial bone substitute. Cow bone for example is used frequently. Using artificial bone stimulates your body to build new bone around the site. The latter option is used to avoid patients having to go to the hospital and having a physician harvest real bone.

There are several types of bone grafts. Your dentist will determine the best type for your particular condition.

  • Autogenous Bone Graft – Harvested from the patient’s own body (usually from the posterior part of the lower jaw or the chin). This method is usually preferred because it produces the most predictable results.
  • Allograft Bone Graft – Cadaver or synthetic bone is used in this type of graft.
  • Xenograft – Cow bone is used in this type of graft. The bone grafting procedure can often take several months to complete. The jaw must accept and fuse together with the new bone to make the area strong before an implant can be attempted.
