TMJ in Hinsdale

TMJ in Hinsdale

TMJ pain can have a negative impact on your quality of life. TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint and we have one on either side of the head, connecting the upper and lower jaw.

The joint is complex, as it’s capable of both hinge and slide motions, and TMJ problems can be equally as complex, potentially involving muscles, tendons, teeth, ligaments, nerves or a combination of related structures. While people often use the term TMJ specialist or TMJ dentist, there isn’t actually a specialty designation in dentistry for this type of practice. However, at Dentistry by Design, we have extensive experience in diagnosing and treating temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD or TMJD). If you’re experiencing TMJ pain, request an appointment online or by calling us at 630-325-2525.

Common Symptoms of TMJ Disorder

TMJ disorders are often caused by the teeth not coming together properly. They can also result from trauma to the joint. People with a temporomandibular joint disorder may experience:

  • Pain in and around the ear
  • Popping or clicking noises when opening the mouth
  • Headaches or neck aches
  • Tenderness in the jaw
  • Difficulty opening the mouth all of the way

TMJ Treatment

At Dentistry by Design, we rely on advanced technology and years of training to accurately diagnose the source of your pain. Sometimes, it’s found to be from a sinus infection, toothache or the beginnings of periodontal disease. In other cases, you can be experiencing a temporomandibular joint disorder. In these instances, we do further test to determine the cause and recommend the appropriate course of treatment.

One such treatment we offer is a custom-made orthotic appliance. It supports the temporomandibular joint and reduces the pain caused by TMD. It also has the added benefit of providing cognitive awareness to the patient to discourage clenching, grinding and other para-functional behavior.
