Myopia (Nearsightedness) Overview
Myopia occurs when the eye is too long for the focusing power of your eye (cornea and lens). This eye condition causes the eye to elongate over time. This elongation causes images to fall in front of the retina, causing objects in the distance to appear blurred. Regular glasses or contact lenses do not account for the elongation of the eye.
Myopia is the most common cause of impaired vision in people under 40, and prevalence is growing at an alarming rate. By the year 2050, researchers believe that roughly 50% of people in the world will by myopic. The risk factors for myopia progression:
- One or both parents being myopic
- Excessive near work
- Limited time outdoors
- If the patient is more myopic than the age expected normal
- Progression of myopia is greater than 0.75 diopters (D) per year
Myopia management, which entails the use of eyedrops or specialized contact lenses that are either used during the day or at night to help slow down the visual deterioration caused by myopia in children.
